March 16, 1936 — January 29, 2025

Franklin

Dr. Richard "Rick" Kingsley Ames, age 88, passed away on January 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family in Franklin, Tennessee.

Born on March 16, 1936, in Daytona Beach, Florida, Rick was the beloved son of the late Orris Kingsley Ames and Helen Reed Ames. In 1960, he married the love of his life, Sheila Jacob, and together they built a life filled with love, family, and deep-rooted values.

At a young age, Rick answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the Navy Reserves during college. Upon completion of dental school, he received his commission in the U.S. Army Reserves. Over the course of 22 years, he rose to the rank of Colonel, a testament to his dedication, leadership, and unwavering patriotism.

Rick’s passion for bringing joy to others led him to a lifelong career in dentistry. He earned a Master’s in Public Health and Ph.D. in dentistry and spent his professional years serving as the Dental Director of the Broward County Public Health Department in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He retired in 2001, leaving behind a legacy of care and compassion for his patients and the South Florida community.

A skilled swimmer, Rick spent several years as a lifeguard on Daytona Beach, saving lives and fostering a love for the water. In his later years, he found solace in woodworking, transforming his garage into a cherished workshop where he created beautiful pieces with his hands.

Known for his generous nature and servant’s heart, Rick was deeply involved in his church and community. He volunteered with The Well, a mission he held dear, and found joy in the warmth of those around him. Those who knew him best will remember his determined spirit, his steadfast kindness, and, above all, his love for family.

Rick had a lifelong passion for trains—riding them, building them, and simply watching them go by. This love was something he joyfully shared with fellow train enthusiasts, as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rick is survived by his devoted wife, Sheila J. Ames; his children, Sheryl (James) Tannahill, Christie "Krysti" (Gene) Doyle, and Michael Bauer; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, two sons: Richard Ames, Jr. and Ramon Ames, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 11:00 AM at SouthView Church in Spring Hill. Rick will be laid to rest at Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
