Joyce Rushin Oswalt, age 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at her home in Spring Hill, Tennessee, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on May 10, 1946, in Greenville, Mississippi, Joyce was the daughter of the late Archie Lee Rushin and Virginia Lee Brown Rushin. In 1966, she married the love of her life, Charles Douglas Oswalt, and together they built a beautiful life filled with faith, family, and adventure as they raised two children. One of their greatest joys was traveling to all 50 states, experiencing the wonders of God’s creation side by side.
A lifelong educator, Joyce dedicated 38 years to teaching History and English at Greenville and Lakeside Public Schools. She inspired generations of middle and high school students with her passion for learning and her kind spirit. After retiring, she continued to find joy in life’s simple pleasures, assisting with homeschooling her grandchildren, spending quiet days at home reading a good book, watching Hallmark movies, playing cards and dominoes with family and friends, and surrounding herself with the color she loved most: blue.
Her life was guided by faith. As a longtime member of Life House and Grace Fellowship, Joyce loved reading God’s Word and treasured her church family. She will be remembered for her warmth, her devotion, and her unwavering love for those closest to her.
Joyce is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Charles Douglas Oswalt; her daughter, Susan Oswalt; her son, Mark (Sarah) Oswalt; and her cherished grandchildren: Alex Daniel Jones, Caleb Douglas Jones, Laura Michelle Jones, and Samuel Michael Oswalt. She also leaves behind dear friends Jane Linker, Willie and Donna Tatum, Clyde and Roxanne Wheeler, Pastor Dale & Patty Campbell, and Pastor JP and Michelle.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her sisters, Vanda Dale and Wanda Gale.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025, at 10:00 AM in the Garden of Serenity at Spring Hill Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to Samaritans Purse and Gideon International.
