George Walter Carey, Jr., age 79, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025, at Williamson Medical Center surrounded by those who loved him. Born on March 5, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late George Carey and Celene Simmons Carey, George’s early years were lovingly shaped by his great-uncle and great-aunt, Norman and Modine Summers, in Town Creek, Alabama.
A proud graduate of Culver County High School, George cherished the lifelong friendships he built there, faithfully organizing quarterly class luncheons in recent years to bring classmates together. His academic journey led him to Auburn University, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering. As a co-op student with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), George laid the foundation for a distinguished career in the chemical industry.
George began his professional path with DuPont in Victoria, Texas, and later rose to serve as Vice President of Operations for Alpha Corporation in Collierville, Tennessee. His leadership continued at Reichold Corporation in Research Triangle, North Carolina, where he served as Vice President of Purchasing. George concluded his accomplished career at Alpha-Owens Corning Corporation in Memphis, Tennessee, retiring in 2015.
Outside of his professional life, George was a man of deep faith and a devoted member of Well Spring Christian Church in Spring Hill. He embraced life fully, enjoying fishing expeditions, including adventurous trips to the Northwest Territory, hunting excursions with his dear friend Terry Pitts in Twist, Arkansas, and playing golf at world-renowned courses like Pebble Beach and enjoyed St. Andrews in Scotland with his son-in-law: Hunter. An avid photographer, George had a keen eye for capturing the beauty around him, and he could often be found savoring a good cup of coffee — one of his simple pleasures.
More than his achievements, George will be remembered for his profound kindness, steadfast friendship, and his heartfelt efforts to stay connected with those he cared about, especially in their times of greatest need.
George leaves behind his beloved wife of nearly 33 years, Diane Carey; his son, Greg (Jennifer) Carey of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and his step daughter, Marion (Hunter) Ingram of Franklin, Tennessee. He was a proud "Poppy" to his grandchildren, Isla and Emerson Ingram, as well as several grandchildren in Pennsylvania.
George's legacy of compassion, loyalty, and joy will continue to live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
The family will receive friends and visitors on Saturday, May 3, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Andy Hudleson officiating. To follow, Mr. George will be laid to rest in the Garden of Memory Hill at Spring Hill Memorial Park.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love, kindness, and compassion shown during such a difficult time. God’s love has been on full display particularly through the outstanding staff at Williamson Medical Center, as well as the church family at Well Spring Christian Church, who provided such loving care for both George and the Family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to Wellspring Christian Church in his memory.
