Obituary

David W. Ruby’s story was one best told not in a single moment, but in the quiet, meaningful scenes he created throughout his life, moments filled with music, laughter, and a deep sense of connection that lingered long after he left the room. On February 11, 1964, in Fairfield, Iowa, David was born to John W. Ruby and Flora Irene Puffinbarger.

From the very beginning, David had a way of seeing the world not just as it was, but as it felt. That gift would become the thread that wove through every chapter of his life. David carried that sense of wonder into his work as a videographer and musician, where he became a true storyteller. He didn’t just capture images or play notes; he captured emotion. Through the lens of his camera and the rhythm of his music, David had a way of making people feel seen, understood, and deeply valued. As a musician and song writer, he never compromised with his vision, didn’t limit himself to playing other people’s music but insisted on being seen for the music he created with his bandmates. As an audio engineer and producer, David gave musicians their voice and helped them to shape their dreams into reality. And as a videographer, while he enjoyed working with musicians on their projects, his gift was to bring emotion to the wedding events that he filmed and produced. He preserved life’s most tender moments, the glance between two people in love, the quiet tears, the laughter that filled a room, and turned them into lasting memories that others would cherish for a lifetime. But the beauty David created in his work was only a reflection of the man he was in everyday life.

David was incredibly kind, warm, and quietly generous. He found joy in lifting others up, whether through his humor, a thoughtful word, or simply being present. He had a rare gift for reflecting back to people the beauty they couldn’t always see in themselves. He gave freely of his time, often helping others without being asked, and never seeking recognition in return. He was a gentle, humble spirit, one who felt deeply and encouraged others to do the same.

Those who knew David often spoke of the peace that seemed to follow him. It was as if the world softened in his presence. Even nature seemed to take notice. Like something out of a storybook, birds and animals would gather near him, visiting at their usual times, waiting patiently for the kindness they knew he would offer. It was a small but perfect reflection of who David was, a soul that welcomed all, human or otherwise, with quiet compassion.

At the heart of David’s life was his family. He shared 36 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Lauri Ruby. Together, they raised five children: Lisa (Alberto) Garcia, Johnathan Ruby, Brandi Ruby, David Ruby, and Mariah Ruby. His love extended to his grandchildren, Joshua Ruby, Joey Sides, and Isabella Sides, who will carry forward his warmth and spirit in their own lives. David is also survived by his brother Doug Ruby, sister-in-law, Gloria Ruby, many cousins, and dear friends, Ross and Leanna Resetich, along with many others who were touched by his kindness. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Dan Ruby and his beloved feline companion, Gizmo.

Though David left this world too soon on March 24, 2026, the story he leaves behind is one of love, creativity, and deep human connection. It lives on in every memory he captured, every note he played, and every life he gently shaped. A celebration of David’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 5:00 PM at Spring Hill Memorial Funeral Home, where family and friends will gather at 4:00 PM to honor a man who didn’t just tell stories; he lived one worth remembering.
